Accepted & Secure in Christ
Coming into UTC, I based my identity on my performance as an athlete. I thought that if I was performing well, I would be liked and accepted, and if I wasn’t performing well, I was failing myself and those around me. Throughout the week, we learned five principles of how to glorify God in our performances and as athletes. The one that stuck with me the most was Inside Game. This principle talks about how we are all motivated by something. I was motivated by the compliments I received from others after a good performance. I depended on my own strength (not God’s) to get through races and runs when they got hard.
After hearing this principle, my mindset has changed.
In Christ, I am accepted and secure. I know now that I don’t have to work harder to prove myself or my worth to anyone because of God’s grace toward us. I am also secure in Christ because God is in control of the circumstances in my life, even when I am not getting the results I hope for. I continue to remind myself of this, especially before runs and races.
I thank God for his goodness and the opportunities I have because of Him. I look for God in little moments because He is always good. UTC has blessed my life in so many ways and has helped me become a better athlete by using my sport as an opportunity to glorify God.
