Becoming More Like Jesus
Ultimate Training Camp was truly the best week of my life. I came into camp not really knowing what to expect, and if I’m being honest, I had some of the wrong expectations. I found myself thinking about things that didn’t matter as much, but the very first principle, “Audience of One,” completely shifted my perspective. It challenged me to recognize the false idols in my life and reminded me that I wasn’t there to chase anything other than a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. From that moment on, every principle, workout, worship session, and conversation pointed me back to Him. The Christ-centered community was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Being surrounded by people who shared the same goal of growing closer to Christ inspired me to create that same kind of community back home. I honestly didn’t want to leave. If I could have stayed there training, serving, and living alongside those people, I would have.
One of the most powerful moments for me came after the Special. Carrying the cross while my body was completely exhausted gave me the smallest glimpse of Christ’s suffering and the sacrifice He made for us. It reminded me that no matter my brokenness, my past, or what lies ahead, Jesus lives within me and His grace is enough. Another principle that deeply impacted me was “Better Over Bitter.” My special team color was purple, the principle color was purple, and it focused on St. Joseph’s endurance through suffering. Since my home parish is St. Joseph Catholic Church, that message felt especially personal and became my favorite principle of the week.
Beyond the sessions themselves, God’s creation surrounding the camp—the mountains, the scenery, and the quiet moments outside—helped me slow down and appreciate His presence in a new way. UTC also gave me a deeper desire to serve others. As my athletic career begins to wind down, I’m excited to use what God has taught me to serve through my career, my future family, my friendships, and wherever He calls me. Ultimate Training Camp didn’t just make me a better athlete; it made me want to become a better disciple of Christ.
